How to grow Iberis Seeds
Iberis, commonly known as candytuft, is a compact flowering plant valued for its masses of blooms and neat, low-growing habit. It grows best in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for borders, edging, rock gardens, and containers.
Sowing Iberis Seeds
Sow directly outdoors after the last frost, or start indoors 4–6 weeks earlier for earlier flowering. Cover seeds lightly with soil and keep the surface evenly moist at around 16–21°C. Germination usually takes 10–20 days.
Growing Conditions
Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin or transplant plants to around 20–30 cm apart. Iberis prefers light, free-draining soil and performs especially well in sunny, dry conditions.
Planting & Garden Use
Iberis is well suited to Mediterranean-style gardens, coastal planting, gravel gardens, and drought-tolerant landscapes. Once established, it requires relatively little watering and produces long-lasting clusters of flowers in shades of white, pink, lilac, or purple. The blooms are attractive to bees and pollinators and provide a bright display through spring and early summer.
Care Tips
Water regularly while young plants establish, then reduce watering once growth becomes strong. Avoid heavy or poorly drained soil, particularly during winter or cool wet periods, as overly wet conditions can reduce plant health. Light trimming after flowering can help maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh growth.
Iberis is ideal for sunny borders, pathways, raised beds, pots, and cascading over walls or edges where its dense flowering habit can be fully appreciated.
