How to grow Portulaca (Moss Rose) Seeds

Portulaca seeds are ideal for hot, sunny gardens and low-water planting. Also known as moss rose, portulaca thrives in full sun, heat, and light, free-draining soil. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or sow directly outdoors once the soil has warmed. Sow seeds on the surface and press them gently into the soil, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil lightly moist, but never wet, at around 21–24°C. Germination usually takes 7–14 days.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants about 15–25 cm apart, depending on the variety. Portulaca grows best in poor to moderately fertile soil with excellent drainage. Avoid heavy, wet soil, as excess moisture can cause weak growth or root problems.

Once established, portulaca is very drought-tolerant and performs especially well in hot climates, Mediterranean gardens, rock gardens, containers, borders, and dry exposed areas. Its bright, colourful flowers open in sunshine and provide long-lasting summer colour with very little maintenance. Water sparingly once plants are established, allowing the soil to dry between waterings.

For best care, grow portulaca in the sunniest position available and avoid overfeeding, as rich soil can produce leafy growth with fewer flowers. Deadheading is usually not necessary, but removing faded blooms can keep plants looking tidy. Portulaca is an excellent choice for balconies, patios, hanging baskets, window boxes, edging, drought-tolerant gardens, and hot, dry planting areas.
