How to grow Gomphocarpus Seeds

Gomphocarpus, commonly known as Balloon Plant or Swan Plant, is a fast-growing ornamental species valued for its unusual inflated seed pods and its importance as a pollinator-friendly plant. It grows best in full sun and well-drained soil, thriving in warm climates and long summers. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or sow directly outdoors once temperatures are consistently warm.

Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep and keep the soil lightly moist during germination at around 20–24°C. Germination usually takes 10–21 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or outdoors after all frost risk has passed. Space plants around 50–80 cm apart to allow for their upright growth and branching habit.

Gomphocarpus performs especially well in Mediterranean-style gardens, wildlife gardens, dry borders, and sunny pollinator planting schemes. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant and handles heat very well. The pale green flowers attract bees and butterflies, while the distinctive balloon-like seed pods provide ornamental interest well into the season.

For best care, water regularly while plants establish, then reduce watering once roots are developed. Avoid waterlogged soil and overly shaded positions, as plants flower best in strong sunlight. In suitable climates, gomphocarpus may self-seed lightly. The decorative seed pods can also be harvested for dried floral arrangements and craft use.
