How to grow Stock Seeds

Stock flowers are valued for their fragrant blooms, soft colours, and long flowering season. They grow best in full sun to partial shade and prefer cool growing conditions with rich, well-drained soil. Start stock seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or sow directly outdoors in cool weather. Cover seeds lightly with soil and keep the growing medium evenly moist at around 15–18°C. Germination usually takes 7–14 days.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them outdoors after frost risk has passed, spacing plants about 20–30 cm apart. Stock prefers fertile soil with good drainage and regular moisture, especially during active growth and flowering. In mild Mediterranean climates, stock can also be grown as a cool-season autumn, winter, or early spring flowering plant.

Stock flowers perform best in cooler temperatures and may slow down during intense summer heat. Their highly fragrant flowers make them excellent for patios, pathways, containers, borders, and cut flower gardens. Many varieties produce dense flower spikes in shades of white, pink, purple, red, cream, and apricot, adding colour and scent to both formal and cottage-style gardens.

For best care, water regularly without allowing the soil to become waterlogged, and feed lightly during the flowering season to encourage continuous blooms. Remove faded flowers to extend flowering and maintain a tidy appearance. Stock flowers are especially popular for cut flower arrangements due to their sweet fragrance and long vase life.
