How to grow Cosmos Seeds

Cosmos are easy-to-grow annual flowers that produce masses of colourful blooms from midsummer until the first frosts. They thrive in sunny locations and are perfect for borders, cutting gardens, and low-maintenance planting schemes.

Light & Location

Choose a sunny location with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Cosmos will tolerate partial shade but flower more heavily in full sun.

Soil Conditions

Cosmos prefer neutral to slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Avoid overly rich soil, as this can lead to excessive foliage and fewer flowers.

Growing Cosmos From Seed

Cosmos are extremely easy to grow from seed and usually germinate within 7 days at around 23°C.

You can start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors once all danger of frost has passed.

For indoor sowing, use pots or trays at least 7cm deep with drainage holes. Scatter seeds thinly across the surface and lightly cover with approximately 0.5cm of seed starting mix.

Direct sowing outdoors is often just as successful, as cosmos grow very quickly once temperatures warm up.

Watering & Care

Once established, cosmos are highly drought tolerant and require very little maintenance.

Water during prolonged dry periods only. Excess fertilizer is not recommended, as it may encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Deadheading regularly will help extend the flowering season. If plants become untidy later in summer, shear them back lightly to encourage fresh growth and another flush of blooms.

Pests & Problems

Cosmos may occasionally attract aphids, flea beetles, or thrips, but these are usually easy to manage with water sprays or insecticidal soap.

Good airflow between plants helps prevent powdery mildew and other fungal diseases.

Self-Seeding & Saving Seeds

Cosmos readily self-seed if spent flowers are left on the plants long enough for seeds to mature.

You can also collect dried seed heads at the end of the season and store seeds in a cool, dry place for sowing the following year.
