How to grow Sage Seeds
Sage is a hardy, aromatic herb that grows best in warm conditions and light, well-draining soil.
Sowing Sage Seeds
Start by sowing sage seeds indoors in a greenhouse or on a warm, sunny windowsill. Alternatively, seeds can be sown directly outside when the weather has warmed up to 18°C or higher, usually in late spring or early summer.
Germination & Soil
Sage thrives in light, well-draining soil enriched with some well-composted organic material. Lightly cover the seeds with a fine layer of soil and keep the soil consistently moist during germination, which usually takes 7–21 days.
Temperature & Planting Out
Sage seeds require warmth for successful germination, so wait until temperatures are consistently above 18°C before moving plants outdoors. Transplant the strongest seedlings outside when the weather is warm and all risk of frost has passed.
Seedling Care
Once the seedlings reach about 5 cm in height, thin them out to prevent overcrowding and ensure each plant has enough space to grow.
Harvesting
Sage plants are fully mature in 60 to 90 days, at which point they will be ready for harvest.
