How to Grow Broccoli Bobby Seeds

Broccoli ‘Bobby’ seeds can be sown indoors from February to April for early crops, or directly outdoors from April to June. They germinate best at temperatures between 10–18°C.

For indoor sowing, use seed trays or small pots filled with seed compost. Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm deep, lightly cover with soil, and water gently. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

Seedlings usually emerge within 7–10 days. Once they sprout, place them in a bright, cool location to prevent weak growth. When seedlings have 4–5 true leaves, harden them off for about a week before transplanting outdoors.

Choose a sunny site with fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Space plants about 40–50 cm apart, with rows 50–60 cm apart. Firm soil well around the roots and water thoroughly after planting.

Water regularly, especially during dry periods, and mulch to retain moisture. Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer or compost tea for best head development.

Broccoli ‘Bobby’ is a fast-maturing variety and is usually ready to harvest in 60–75 days. Cut the main head while the buds are tight and green. Side shoots will continue to develop for several weeks after the main harvest.

Additional tips:

  • Protect young plants from cabbage root fly with collars or mesh.

  • Use netting to prevent damage from birds and cabbage white butterflies.

  • Companion plants include onions, celery, spinach, chamomile, and dill.

  • Avoid planting after other brassicas in the same soil to reduce disease buildup.

  • Harvest early in the morning for the best flavor and texture.
