How to grow Gomphrena (Globe Amaranth) Seeds

Gomphrena is a colourful, heat-loving flower that thrives in full sunlight and is valued for its globe-shaped blooms that are excellent for cutting and drying.

Sowing Gomphrena Seeds

If starting seeds indoors, sow them about 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Plant the seeds just below the soil surface, about 0.5 cm deep, and lightly cover them with soil.

Germination & Spacing

Keep the seed trays in a warm spot at temperatures around 21–24°C. Germination should occur within 7–14 days. If sowing directly outdoors, space plants about 30 cm apart to allow for proper growth.

Location & Soil

Start by choosing a sunny spot in your garden, as Gomphrena thrives in full sunlight, needing at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. It also prefers well-draining soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0.

Direct Sowing Outdoors

If you prefer to plant seeds directly outdoors, wait until the soil has warmed up and all risk of frost has passed. Directly sow the seeds in prepared soil and water gently but consistently to keep the soil moist during germination, while avoiding waterlogging.

Watering & Care

Gomphrena plants are relatively low-maintenance, but they do benefit from regular watering during dry spells. Once established, they are quite drought-tolerant and can withstand hot, dry conditions.

Deadheading spent flowers will help promote more blooms.

Height & Flowering

As they grow, Gomphrena plants typically reach a height of around 30–60 cm, with globe-shaped, brightly coloured flowers that are perfect for cutting or adding to garden beds. These flowers bloom in a range of colours, including pink, purple, white, and red, and can last well into the fall.

Gomphrena is often grown for its long-lasting, vibrant flowers that dry well for use in arrangements.
