How to grow Nicotiana Seeds

Nicotiana plants are valued for their fragrant and colourful flowers, making them a beautiful addition to borders, containers, and pollinator-friendly gardens.

When to Sow Nicotiana Seeds

Nicotiana seeds can be sown indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost date, or directly outdoors after the last frost once the soil has warmed.

Germination

Place seed trays or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight and keep the soil moist but not soggy. Nicotiana seeds typically germinate within 10–14 days.

Soil Preparation

Prepare a well-draining, fertile soil mix for planting. Nicotiana prefers moderately rich soil with good drainage.

Indoor Sowing

If starting indoors, fill seed trays or small pots with the prepared soil mix. Moisten the soil before sowing the seeds.

Sowing Seeds

Sow the Nicotiana seeds on the soil surface, pressing them lightly into the soil. Nicotiana seeds are very small, so they do not need to be buried deeply.

Mist gently to moisten the soil.

Transplanting

Once the Nicotiana seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, they can be transplanted into the garden.

Outdoor Sowing

If sowing directly outdoors, prepare the planting area by loosening the soil and removing any weeds. Sow the seeds on the soil surface and gently press them into the soil.

Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs.

Maintenance

Water the Nicotiana seedlings regularly. Once established, Nicotiana plants are relatively drought-tolerant and require minimal maintenance.

Blooming

With proper care, Nicotiana plants will begin to bloom in about 8–10 weeks after sowing seeds.

Enjoy the fragrant and colourful flowers of Nicotiana throughout the growing season.
