How to grow Sweetcorn Seeds

Sweetcorn loves warmth and needs plenty of sunlight to grow strong. Golden Bantam is an old-fashioned, non-hybrid variety prized for its full corn flavour and sweet kernels.

Sowing Sweetcorn Seeds

Sow the seeds directly into the ground once the soil has warmed up to around 16°C. Plant seeds about 2.5 cm deep and 20–30 cm apart in rows.

Spacing & Watering

Space rows at least 75 cm apart to allow enough room for the plants to grow tall. Water the seeds well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, especially when the plants are flowering.

Growing Conditions

Sweetcorn plants are tall, so ensure they have plenty of space to grow and are shielded from strong winds if necessary. Golden Bantam plants typically grow to about 1.8–2.4 meters tall and are well suited to cooler climates, as they have a shorter growing season compared to some other sweetcorn varieties.

Harvesting

Once the plants start to produce ears, wait about 70–100 days depending on the variety before harvesting. Golden Bantam typically matures in around 75–85 days. Harvest when the husks turn brown and the kernels are plump, then gently twist the ears off the stalks.

Kitchen Use

Golden Bantam is perfect for fresh eating, canning, or freezing. Its sweetness makes it a favourite for grilling, boiling, or enjoying straight from the cob.

This variety is especially prized for its old-fashioned, full corn flavour, making it a great choice for gardeners who appreciate traditional sweetcorn varieties.
