DESCRIPTION

Cerinthe ‘Pride of Gibraltar’, also known as honeywort, is a distinctive Mediterranean annual admired for its striking purple-blue bracts and soft blue tubular flowers that hang in elegant clusters. The plant produces attractive blue-green foliage with a slightly waxy texture, creating a beautiful contrast against the rich coloured blooms. Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, it is a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Cerinthe thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and is naturally adapted to warm, dry conditions, making it particularly suitable for Mediterranean and low-water gardens. Growing to around 45–60 cm tall, it works well in borders, naturalistic plantings, and containers, and can also be used in cut flower arrangements.

Once established it is quite drought tolerant and often self-seeds gently, returning year after year with very little maintenance.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Sow Cerinthe ‘Pride of Gibraltar’ directly outdoors in spring after the last frost, or in autumn in mild Mediterranean climates. Seeds can also be started indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting, but they prefer minimal root disturbance.

Plant in a sunny position with well-drained soil and space plants about 30–40 cm apart to allow good air circulation. Water regularly while young, but once established the plants are fairly drought tolerant and prefer slightly drier conditions rather than constantly wet soil. Avoid overly rich soil, as this can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Plants may self-seed naturally if some flowers are left to mature at the end of the season.
