Mediterranean Balcony Flowers – April Sunset Mix

When to sow
Sow from early spring to late spring, once the risk of frost has passed. In hot Mediterranean climates, sow before May, preferably April. In mild Mediterranean climates, this mix can also be sown in autumn for earlier spring flowering.

Where to grow
Choose a sunny balcony, terrace, container, raised bed, or garden border. This mix performs best in full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Soil / compost
Use free-draining compost or garden soil. For pots and balcony planters, use a good-quality multipurpose compost mixed with a little grit or perlite to improve drainage. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.

How to sow
Scatter seeds thinly over the surface of the soil and cover lightly with a fine layer of compost. Water gently after sowing. Keep the soil lightly moist until seedlings appear.

Container growing
Use containers at least 20–30 cm deep with drainage holes. Do not overcrowd; thin seedlings once they are large enough to handle so each plant has room to develop.

Watering
Water regularly while seedlings establish. Once mature, the plants are fairly tolerant of dry conditions, but container-grown flowers will need more frequent watering in hot weather.

Feeding
Feed lightly every few weeks if growing in pots. Avoid overfeeding, as too much fertiliser can produce leafy growth with fewer flowers.

Flowering period
Flowers usually appear from late spring through summer, depending on sowing time and climate.

Maintenance
Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage more blooms. Allow some flowers to set seed at the end of the season if you want a more natural, self-seeding effect.
