DESCRIPTION

Matthiola longipetala subsp. bicornis ‘Starlight Scentsation’, commonly known as night scented stock, is grown primarily for its exceptional evening fragrance rather than its subtle daytime appearance. As dusk falls, the small, delicate flowers release a rich, sweet perfume that fills the surrounding space, making it ideal for planting near seating areas, balconies, and windows. The plants have a light, airy habit with soft green foliage and understated blooms in soft lilac and pale tones. Easy to grow and fast to flower, it thrives in sunny positions and well-drained soil, bringing a sensory dimension to summer gardens.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring or autumn in mild climates, as plants prefer cool conditions and do not transplant well. Scatter seeds thinly and lightly cover with soil, keeping the area moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to about 15–20 cm apart. Grow in full sun or light partial shade in well-drained soil; avoid overly rich soil, which can reduce flowering and fragrance. Water regularly during establishment, then moderately, as plants tolerate some dryness.

For continuous fragrance, sow in succession every few weeks.
