How to grow Thyme German Winter Seeds

Thyme is a fragrant, hardy herb that grows best in warm, sunny conditions and light, well-draining soil.

Sowing Thyme Seeds

Start by sowing thyme seeds indoors, either in a greenhouse or on a warm, sunny windowsill. Sow seeds early in the season to allow enough time for growth before transplanting outdoors.

Germination & Soil

Thyme thrives in light, well-draining soil enriched with well-composted material. Cover the seeds lightly with fine soil and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 7–21 days.

Temperature & Planting Out

Thyme is sensitive to cold, so wait until temperatures consistently reach 18°C or warmer before moving plants outdoors. If preferred, seeds can also be sown directly in the garden once the weather has warmed up.

Seedling Care

Once the seedlings have reached about 5 cm in height, thin them out, leaving the strongest plants. Gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions by hardening them off over a week or so before transplanting them into the garden.

Growing Conditions

Plant thyme in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, spacing each plant appropriately to ensure good air circulation. This helps reduce the risk of excess moisture and encourages healthy growth.

Harvesting

With proper care, thyme plants will mature in approximately 60–90 days, providing you with a fragrant herb that can be harvested for culinary and medicinal use.
