How to grow Bee & Butterfly Seed Mix

Bee & Butterfly Mix is a colourful blend of flowers specially selected to attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators while creating a long-lasting wildflower display.

When to Sow

Sow in spring from late March to early June as the soil warms, or sow in autumn for earlier flowering the following year.

Seed Quantity

Sow thinly at approximately 2 grams per square meter. Avoid sowing too thickly so plants do not compete with each other.

Preparing the Soil

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Remove weeds thoroughly, level the soil with a rake, and tread lightly before sowing.

Mixing the seeds with dry sand helps achieve a more even distribution and makes it easier to spot uncovered areas.

Sowing Methods

Seeds can be sown by broadcasting evenly across the soil surface or by sowing in shallow drills spaced approximately 30cm apart.

Broadcast sowing is quicker, while sowing in drills makes it easier to distinguish flowers from weed seedlings as plants develop.

Autumn Sowing

Autumn sowings generally flower earlier the following year. In colder regions, young plants may benefit from protection with horticultural fleece or a cloche during prolonged frosts.

Watering & Maintenance

Water seeds and young plants during dry periods, especially while establishing.

Taller flowers may benefit from support in exposed or windy gardens.

At the end of the season, leave seed heads in place for birds or cut plants back and prepare the area for the following year.

Best Garden Uses

Bee & Butterfly Mixes are ideal for beds and borders, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, courtyards, and informal planting schemes.

How to Attract More Pollinators

Plant flowers in large clumps and choose a variety of colours and flower shapes to attract different bee species.

Include plants that flower throughout spring, summer, and autumn to provide a continuous source of nectar and pollen.

Avoid pesticides whenever possible, as they can harm beneficial insects alongside pests.

Providing shallow water sources, sheltered corners, logs, and climbing plants can help create habitats for bees and pollinators.

Pollinators prefer sunny, sheltered gardens, so reducing strong winds and increasing sun exposure can make your garden even more attractive to wildlife. Shop Bee & Butterfly Mix!
