Growing Chard from Seeds

Sowing:
Swiss chard does best in cool temperatures (high temperatures slow down leaf production) but it will tolerate moderate heat. Sow seed about a month before the expected last day of frost and continue through midsummer. Or start plants indoors to transplant out later.

Growing:
Chard prefers full sun, although it will tolerate partial shade. Plant the seeds an 2-3cm deep and up to 15cm apart. Thin to about 30cm when the plants are easy to handle. If chard plants are crowded they will just produce smaller leaves. Keep soil evenly moist.

Harvesting:
Leaves can be harvested about 4 weeks after planting. Remove a few of the outer leaves at a time for a continuous harvest throughout the growing season. Or you can wait until the plant is more mature to cut all the leaves off as a bunch and let them grow back.
