How to grow Lemon Balm Seeds

Lemon balm is a vigorous, aromatic herb that grows well in full sun and moist, well-drained soil.

Sowing Lemon Balm Seeds

Sow lemon balm seeds between late March and May by scattering them on the surface of quality seed compost, then lightly cover with compost or vermiculite.

Germination

Place the seed tray in a propagator set to 20–25°C or inside a sealed polythene bag. Keep the compost slightly dry, as light is essential for germination, which typically takes up to 21 days.

Seedling Care

Once seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them to cooler conditions until they are ready to be planted outdoors.

Planting Out

After the last frost has passed, gradually acclimatize the plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Plant them in full sun, spaced 30 cm apart, in moist, well-drained soil.

Growing Notes

Lemon balm can thrive in poor soils, but growing it in containers can help control its vigorous growth.
